A Paediatric Supramalleolar Orthosis (SMO) is a custom device designed for children to stabilize the foot and ankle. Unlike Ankle-Foot Orthoses (AFOs), which extend from below the knee to the foot, SMOs cover only the area from just above the ankle to the foot. This makes SMOs ideal for addressing milder issues, such as flat feet or minor alignment problems, while enhancing gait and stability in children without placing excessive limitations.
Utilizing ultra-thin, flexible thermoplastic, SMO applies gentle compression to the foot’s soft tissues, providing stability for children while supporting natural growth.
HOW DOES SMO HELP?
Our SMOs are crafted from thin, flexible thermoplastic, which uses a patented design to compress the foot’s soft tissues dynamically. This design provides stability while supporting natural development.
SMOs are clearly marked as ‘left’ and ‘right’ to ensure optimal function of the compression system.
Purpose and Functions:
Foot and Ankle Support: Provides support around the ankle and foot to help with proper alignment and stability.
Gait Improvement: Assists in correcting gait abnormalities and enhances walking stability.

Assessment:
Our podiatrists will carry out a detailed evaluation to determine your child’s specific needs.
Measurement or scan:
We take precise measurements of your child's foot at key landmarks to create an exact mold. A 3D scan of your child’s foot may be taken to ensure a precise fit.
Fabrication:
The SMO is made from lightweight, durable materials, such as thermoplastic, which are molded to fit the child’s foot and ankle.
Fitting and Adjustment:
The orthosis is fitted to the child, with adjustments made as needed to ensure comfort and effectiveness.
